Malawi records sharp drop in malaria cases in first half of 2026

Malawi’s Ministry of Health has announced encouraging progress in its national fight against malaria, recording a notable decline in infections during the first six months of 2026.

Presenting the latest surveillance data, National Malaria Control Programme Manager Dr Lumbani Munthali reported that Malawi registered approximately 1.8 million malaria cases between January and June 2026.

This marks a substantial reduction from the 2.4 million cases reported during the same six-month period in 2025. Munthali described the drop as a positive step forward, though he cautioned that health authorities are far from complacent in their push to eliminate the disease.
