Dating with kids: The golden rule of the first introduction

Dating with kids in the mix is a whole different ballgame. Falling in love is the easy part, but deciding when to bring a new partner home to meet the family? That takes a real strategy.

According to relationship expert Ocholi Okutepa, founder of Relationship and Marriage Outreach, timing and intention are everything. The golden rule is simple: wait until the commitment is real. Kids need stability, and as Okutepa puts it, you should only bring someone around when “you believe that will be a better example than just another bad example.”

Bringing someone new into the picture isn’t about asking your children for permission, but about treating them as key players in your world. Giving them a heads-up early on allows everyone to transition smoothly. As Okutepa notes, “you want to give people the opportunity to process reality even if they cannot choose the reality.” Whether they are toddlers needing simple reassurance, teens processing big feelings, or adult kids who just appreciate the courtesy, age-appropriate honesty goes a long way.

Remember, the initial meet-and-greet is just the kickoff. The real work happens when everyday life sets in, from handling discipline to managing blended family dynamics. “The easiest thing to do in this world is to fall in love,” Okutepa reminds us. “Starting is very easy. It’s finishing or keeping it going, that’s the big deal.” Pace yourself, keep communication open, and build that blended future on a solid foundation!
