Team SA finishes 11th at Commonwealth Games with 28 Medals

Team South Africa (SA) concluded its 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign at the closing ceremony in Glasgow, with 20-year-old para-athletics silver medallist Masala Makatu leading the nation’s contingent as flagbearer.

Makatu earned Team SA’s first track and field medal of the competition with a silver-medal performance in the men’s T12 100m. Overall, Team SA secured 28 medals, improving by one medal on its tally from Birmingham 2022, to finish 11th on the final medal standings.

Cyclists Mitchell Sparrow and S’annara Grove featured in the final day’s competition before Prince Edward formally declared the Games closed at The Hydro. Scottish rock band Simple Minds closed out the ceremony with a performance of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” as the Commonwealth flame was extinguished.
