The United States (US) State Department has announced plans to nearly double its financial commitment to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), pledging an additional $242 million in direct emergency assistance.
The new allocation brings the total direct US funding for the outbreak response to $512 million. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed the expanded financial package, noting that the funds will support key operational activities over the next six months.
The surge in support comes amid mounting pressure on global health agencies to halt the virus’s spread in eastern DRC. Health officials have described the current epidemic as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record, driven by diagnostic delays, surveillance gaps, and ongoing armed conflict in the region, alongside a lack of approved vaccines or targeted treatments for the circulating strain.
The additional resources are allocated to bolster disease surveillance, field diagnostics, patient management, and cross-border containment measures to prevent further regional escalation.
