Legal proceedings surrounding South Sudan’s suspended First Vice President (VP), Dr Riek Machar, have sparked fresh concerns for the country’s fragile 2018 peace deal after defence lawyers reported restricted access to their client.
During court proceedings in Juba, defence counsel informed the judge that security delays have prevented them from meeting Machar at his residence, where he remains under house arrest, hindering their ability to prepare his defence.
Machar plays a pivotal role in maintaining the country’s political transition. Legal observers note that the trial’s transparency and adherence to due process will serve as a critical benchmark for South Sudan’s judicial integrity and long-term stability.
Reporting from Juba, The Radio Community Chief Executive Officer, Chris Marol confirmed that security officials cited administrative clearance issues for the initial delays, adding that legal teams are expecting full access to Dr Machar today ahead of the upcoming court submissions.
