Today is Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Day, marked every August 10. The day serves as a reminder that every birth, death, marriage and divorce needs to be officially recorded.
Governments and the United Nations (UN) say strong civil registration systems are vital for delivering healthcare, education, voting rights and social protection, especially during crises such as pandemics and climate disasters.
However, millions of people worldwide, particularly in rural and low-income communities, still live without legal identity because their births were never registered. Advocates say closing that gap is key to ensuring no one is left behind.
