Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have expressed deep regret following comments made by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who attributed a recent surge of attacks in Nigeria to a security collapse in the three Sahelian nations.
Speaking through the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the three countries pushed back against Tinubu’s assessment, warning that such framing risks stoking unnecessary tensions between neighbouring nations bound by shared history and geography.
The AES highlighted the ongoing efforts and sacrifices made by its national defence forces to combat insurgency in the region, reiterating that the security threats facing both Nigeria and Sahelian states are complex and cross national borders.
To address these shared challenges effectively, the alliance called for strengthened regional cooperation rather than public blame.
Journalist and political analyst Naganou Moussa noted that the diplomatic friction brings to light the delicate state of security relations in West Africa as regional leaders struggle to co-ordinate responses to transnational militant groups.
