South Africa’s (SA) Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says government is moving to criminalise illicit mining and crack down on those who assist illegal miners.
She says the proposed amendments would increase some penalties to fines of up to $6 million and prison terms of up to 30 years.
Kubayi says illicit mining is linked to serious crimes including kidnapping, human trafficking, rape, murder and corruption.
