Youssouf has called for sustained investment in education, skills, entrepreneurship and employment to unlock the potential of Africa’s young people.
In a message marking International Youth Day, Youssouf said the energy, creativity and determination of young Africans are central to the continent’s development and integration.
“Africa’s youth are not simply the leaders of tomorrow; they are partners and leaders today. Their voices, ideas and aspirations must be at the heart of the decisions that shape our shared future,” Youssouf said.
Youth empowerment has been one of Youssouf’s priorities since the campaign for leadership of the AUC.
Youssouf reaffirmed a commitment to translating that priority into practical opportunities for young Africans to participate, lead and contribute to the continent’s development.
Youssouf said recognising the importance of young people is not enough. Governments and institutions must make sustained investments that enable youth to realise their potential. “We must move from speaking about young people to working with young people. Their energy, innovation and determination are indispensable to building the Africa We Want,” Youssouf said.
Youssouf called for stronger cooperation involving governments, public institutions, the private sector and young people.
The partnerships should create an environment in which youth can secure education and training, build businesses, find decent work and participate meaningfully in decision-making. “Youth empowerment is not an option; it is a continental imperative,” Youssouf said.
“Africa’s future will be shaped by how effectively we invest in, listen to and create opportunities for our young people today.”
Africa has the world’s youngest population, providing the continent with considerable potential to expand innovation, productivity and economic development.
However, young people continue to face challenges including unemployment, insufficient access to finance, skills mismatches and limited representation in public decision-making.
Youssouf reaffirmed a commitment to placing young people at the centre of AU efforts to build an inclusive, peaceful and prosperous continent.
