Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur has been elected Speaker of the House of the People, the lower house of the Somali Federal Parliament, according to a report by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).
Nur secured the leadership post after winning 142 votes in a parliamentary ballot, defeating his rival candidate, Abdulkadir Omar Moallim, who received 30 votes.
In line with parliamentary regulations, SONNA reported that Nur resigned from his post as Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport and stepped down from his political party on the same day to maintain political neutrality as Speaker.
Following the confirmation of the election results, Nur was formally sworn in to lead the lower house of Parliament.
