The fight over South Africa’s (SA) future energy mix is heading back to court next week.
The Supreme Court of Appeal will hear a challenge by environmental and youth organisations against government’s plans to procure 1 500 megawatts of new coal-fired power.
The organisations say the decision failed to adequately consider the impact of coal pollution on health, the environment and children’s constitutional rights.
The case stems from the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan, which provided for 1 500 megawatts of additional coal-fired power.
The High Court previously ruled in favour of the African Climate Alliance, Vukani Environmental Movement and groundWork, finding that the relevant decision-makers had failed to adequately consider the environmental and health impacts of new coal, including its implications for children’s rights.
Government is now appealing that judgment.
