In its latest report released in August 2026, the IMF identified member countries whose Article IV consultations had been delayed by more than 18 months as of June 30, 2026. Sudan continues to feature on the list, reflecting the challenges of conducting regular economic assessments in a country facing prolonged political and security difficulties.
Article IV consultations are a central part of the IMF’s surveillance framework. During the reviews, IMF staff assess economic conditions, fiscal and monetary policies, financial sector stability and broader economic risks. The process also enables the Fund to provide policy recommendations aimed at supporting macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth.
The IMF said delays to consultations can occur for a variety of reasons, including programme-related discussions, additional negotiations with authorities, government changes, staffing constraints and requests from national authorities. The Fund also identified political and security conditions as a major cause of delays in affected countries.
