Morocco authorities have intercepted hundreds of migrants attempting to cross illegally into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta, highlighting the desperate conditions facing migrants stranded along the border.
According to local media reports, nearly 300 individuals, predominantly from sub-Saharan Africa, attempted to breach reinforced security barriers near the border before being turned back by Moroccan police forces.
The incident underscores the growing humanitarian strain in the region, where displaced individuals often face prolonged delays, severe shortages, and harsh living conditions while seeking passage into European territory.
Speaking to reporters, a Moroccan national who was among those attempting the crossing painted a grim picture of the situation on the ground, describing a lack of basic necessities and medical care.
He stated that those stranded are living without adequate access to food or water, with many suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes or injuries sustained during crossing attempts. He added that migrants face absolute uncertainty over how long they will remain in these conditions as security measures along the enclave border continue to tighten.
Ceuta, along with Melilla, forms one of the European Union’s only two land borders on the African continent, making both enclaves frequent focal points for migration attempts.
