The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has departed Banjul for Libreville, Gabon, after accepting an invitation to serve as the Special Guest Speaker at the Gabonese Republic’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations on Monday, 17 August 2026.

The annual national holiday marks Gabon’s full independence from French colonial rule on August 17, 1960.

The visit follows Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s state visit to The Gambia earlier this month, where the two leaders signed bilateral agreements to strengthen co-operation across trade, education, health, and diplomacy.
