SABC’s Dr Vuyo Nyembezi spotlights AI role in African media

Channel Africa will host an international webinar on August 25, 2026, to explore the continent’s digital future, with a sharp focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on African youth.

Organised as part of International Youth Month, the webinar, titled “Africa’s Digital Future, Innovation and Technology”, will run from 10:00 to 11:00 CAT. The event aims to redefine technological innovation from a uniquely African perspective and highlight how the continent’s young population is driving the global AI revolution.

Speaking in an interview on Africa Update, Dr Vuyo Nyembezi, SABC Group Executive, Technology, highlighted that AI has moved beyond a theoretical future concept into a core strategic driver for public broadcasting.

“AI is no longer a future concept for broadcasters; it is already reshaping the whole broadcast chain, from content discovery to how we package and distribute our content,” Nyembezi said. “It is actually a unique opportunity for South Africa and Africa at large to tap into this shift. It becomes central to your strategy as a broadcaster.”

Nyembezi noted that AI tools are critical for breaking down language barriers across the continent through automated translation and multi-language accessibility. He added that AI-driven personalisation and recommendation algorithms are essential for engaging younger audiences who consume content on demand via mobile devices rather than traditional linear radio and television.

Addressing widespread concerns surrounding job displacement, Nyembezi reassured media professionals that AI is designed to enhance efficiency rather than replace personnel.

“Human will always be at the centre of AI, what is referred to as ‘human in the loop’,” Nyembezi explained. “You use AI to do the heavy lifting, and the human becomes the supervisor of those tools. Additionally, as African broadcasters, we must ensure AI adoption is ethical and deliberate, strengthening cybersecurity and content verification to combat misinformation and fake news while maintaining public trust.”

The webinar will feature panellists and industry experts discussing policy frameworks, skills development, and strategies to ensure African youth remain at the forefront of the global digital economy.
