The bi-annual HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir, is now available across 14 health facilities in Malawi’s Lilongwe and Blantyre, with plans underway to expand the rollout nationwide.
The injectable treatment was introduced in June 2026 to complement Malawi’s oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) initiative launched in 2021, which has reached more than 90 000 people across the country.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson Benedictor Mbewe confirmed that young adults aged 20 to 34 represent the highest proportion of clients accessing the service.
Preliminary data from pilot sites offering all three PrEP options, daily oral pills, vaginal rings, and the twice-yearly injection, indicates that Lenacapavir has rapidly emerged as the preferred choice among Malawians seeking HIV prevention.
