Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris says the government will launch a national dialogue focused on reconciliation, constitutional reform and elections.
The announcement comes as Sudan enters its fourth year of a civil war that has displaced more than 14 million people.
Idris says the dialogue will be Sudanese-led and open to all Sudanese.
He says it aims to sustain reconciliation and constitutional reforms leading to free and fair elections.
But the plan comes as Sudan remains divided after more than three years of civil war.
Millions have been displaced, infrastructure is damaged, and the United Nations says that what is the world’s largest displacement crisis is now also a hunger crisis.
The key question now is whether meaningful dialogue is possible while war persists, and whether all political and civilian forces will participate.
All previous attempts to secure a ceasefire and end the war have failed.
Analysts say national dialogue can only succeed if it brings together all Sudanese political and civilian forces.
The African Union has also called for a comprehensive Sudanese-led political process, alongside an immediate ceasefire and a political settlement.
