President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has issued an official presidential proclamation declaring today, Monday, August 24, 2026, as National Flag Day across Liberia, designating it a national public holiday.
The proclamation calls on all citizens and foreign residents across the country to give prominence to the occasion by displaying the national flag on all residential buildings, government offices, and commercial properties. All public offices, schools, and business establishments are ordered closed for the day.
Organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Flag Day Planning Committee under the theme “The Flag We Raise, The Values We Uphold”, official celebrations feature a competitive parade drill by 30 selected schools marching from the Barclay Training Center along United Nations Drive to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street.
The indoor program includes a keynote address by Cllr. Jallah Barbu and a formal pass-in-review before Boakai, Vice President Jeremiah Koung, and members of the 55th Legislature.
First established by an Act of Legislature in 1915, National Flag Day commemorates the 1847 adoption of the national banner, designed by a committee of women led by Susannah Lewis, symbolising West Africa’s oldest republic and its sovereign independence.
