Military officers from Uganda and Burundi have visited Israel to hold consultations on the potential deployment of peacekeeping troops to the Gaza Strip, following international efforts to restore stability in the region.

The delegation, comprising officials from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and their Burundian counterparts, arrived in Israel amidst ongoing discussions to establish an international force to assist with security and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Explaining the motivations behind the two nations’ willingness to participate in the initiative, Kampala-based correspondent Cassius Ochokombege notes that Uganda and Burundi possess extensive experience in international military operations, particularly through African Union peace missions.

Key drivers behind their involvement include strengthening defence ties with Western partners and Israel, demonstrating operational capability in international conflict resolution, and securing resources and financial support for their armed forces through international force participation. The initiative also presents an opportunity to elevate the diplomatic standing of both nations in global peace and security affairs.

Talks remain ongoing as all parties assess the security environment and legal frameworks before any final decisions are reached.
