The motion of no confidence against South Africa’s (SA) National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza, has been defeated in Parliament.
The motion was brought by the opposition, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) following Didiza’s decision not to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent interdict application in the Western Cape High Court, which sought to halt the parliamentary impeachment process against him.
During the parliamentary debate, EFF leader Julius Malema argued that Didiza failed to demonstrate impartiality and prioritised the interests of her party, the African National Congress , over the institutional independence of the legislature.
Despite the EFF’s push, the National Assembly voted down the motion, allowing Didiza to retain her position as head of the legislature.
