African women possess the expertise required to redesign and reform continental health systems if granted equal representation in key decision-making forums, according to global health law expert Ina Kafunda.
Speaking at the two-day Pan-African Women in Health conference in Johannesburg, Kafunda, who serves as the Health Policy and Law Lead at the Africa Lead HIV Control Working Group in Zambia, stressed that women must move beyond grassroots advocacy and secure seats at high-level leadership tables.
Kafunda emphasised that sustainable health reforms across the continent depend on women directly participating in strategic planning, healthcare leadership, and policy drafting.
“African women have something to say and they need to be part of this conversation,” Kafunda said. “Most importantly, they need to be part of the conversation in those rooms where decisions are being made, decisions about budgets, decisions about what funding needs to look like, and decisions about who should lead the conversations around the global health architecture moving forward.”
