The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has withdrawn its support for embattled FIFA President Gianni Infantino, adding to the growing international pressure on the football governing body’s Chief Executive.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the FIGC cited “recent initiatives promoted by the FIFA President concerning governance and the development of international competitions” as the primary reason for rescinding its backing.
Infantino faces mounting calls to resign following his aborted proposal to sell commercial stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private equity investors. The controversial project sparked widespread opposition across member countries, costing Infantino the backing of several influential national football associations.
