Shifting attitudes drive Botswana same-sex marriage conversation

Human rights advocate and lawyer Dr Unity Dow is calling for a balanced public discourse as Botswana navigates growing national debates surrounding same-sex marriage and the modern evolution of the traditional family structure.

Dow notes that social attitudes in the country are gradually shifting, urging the public and lawmakers to weigh both the potential benefits and perceived risks when considering legal reform.

Speaking on the changing societal landscape, Dow stresses the importance of focusing on stability and social harmony rather than opposition.

“When you engage in these issues, you must always ask the question;  what is the good that’s being promoted here? I think stability and love are important,” Dow said. “On the other hand, what is the harm that you think is going to be promoted by these two women getting married? People realise there really is no harm to society. So, I think a conversation needs to continue around what is family.”
