Public expectation is mounting across Zambia as citizens await the announcement of a new cabinet ahead of President Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration at the National Heroes Stadium this Tuesday.
With Hichilema taking the oath of office for his second five-year term, attention has turned sharply to the executive appointments that will shape his administration’s economic and governance agenda through 2031.
Highlighting the public’s focus on the incoming executive line-up, Zambian political commentator Chanoda Ngwira noted that citizens are eager to see who will be entrusted to deliver on the government’s mandate.
“In the next coming days, Zambians are yearning to see the new cabinet who will assist incumbent President Hichilema in terms of governing this country,” Ngwira said. “Zambians are too expectant to see who will make it to that particular list, those who will be assisting the President, and those who will carry out his vision for the next five years.”
The swearing-in ceremony follows a contentious post-election period after Hichilema secured re-election in the August 13 general election. Main opposition candidate Brian Mundubile rejected the outcome, and political tensions flared further after Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, were arrested and charged with treason over alleged security threats.
Despite the domestic friction, several regional leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, are attending today’s ceremony in Lusaka as Hichilema officially begins his second term and prepares to name his cabinet.
