African gaming regulators and industry leaders say stronger regulation and consumer protection will be critical to maintaining public trust as the sector continues to expand.

Speaking at the African Lotteries and Gaming Association (ALGA) Chief Executive Officer’s Forum in Durban, ALGA Board Chairperson Sebina Hlapolosa says regulation should not come at the expense of innovation, but should instead create an environment where the two can work together

“The goal should be an environment in which innovation can flourish because the rules are clear, institutions are capable, consumers are protected, and trust is high. That’s not a choice between regulation and innovation. It is the work of making them reinforce one another. And ultimately, that work matters because of the social contract that sits beneath this industry. The sustainability of any sector depends on public confidence.”
