Ministry of Health and WHO declare cholera and mpox successfully contained in Malawi

Health authorities in Malawi have declared that two major public health threats, cholera and mpox, have been successfully contained following a comprehensive nationwide response.

According to a joint statement released by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO), Malawi has recorded zero laboratory-confirmed cholera cases for over 28 consecutive days, alongside zero mpox cases for more than 90 consecutive days.

The achievement marks the end of a rigorous outbreak control effort that saw health officials manage 3 200 cholera cases across 18 affected districts and isolate 162 confirmed mpox cases nationwide.

Despite reaching the official containment thresholds, the Ministry of Health has urged local communities to maintain strict standards of hygiene and remain vigilant to prevent any resurgence of either disease.
