Fatalities among SA police officers drop to 12 over past year

South Africa’s (SA) Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, has welcomed a significant decline in the number of police officers killed in the line of duty over the past year.

Speaking ahead of the annual Police Commemoration Day ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Dimpane confirmed that 12 police officers lost their lives between April 1,2025 and March 31, 2026, down from 27 fallen officers recorded during the previous reporting period. President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officiate the official commemoration service honoring the deceased members.

Highlighting that eight of the 12 fatalities occurred in Gauteng province, Dimpane noted that policing strategies in the province require urgent review.

Appealing directly to young South Africans to consider joining the SA Police Service, she described police work as a vital public calling essential to combating rampant crime nationwide.
