South Africa (SA) High Court in Pretoria has dismissed an application by former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to have corruption charges against her thrown out, ruling that the prosecution has presented sufficient evidence to establish a case.
Delivering the judgment, Judge Mashudu Munzhelele rejected the defense’s Section 174 application for discharge across all counts. Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering, involving allegations that she solicited millions of rands in bribes from a military contractor between 2016 and 2019 during her tenure as SA’s Minister of Defence and Military Veterans.
Following the ruling, Mapisa-Nqakula will now be required to take the witness stand to present her defense against the state’s evidence.
