The President of Gambia, Adama Barrow has pledged to improve the country’s electricity supply by end of next month.
Thousands of people took to the streets on Wednesday in demonstrations across the capital, Banjul, and surrounding cities, with crowds burning tires, blocking traffic, and calling for the president to step down, following 48-hour blackouts.
Police deployed tear gas to disperse the protestors near the headquarters of the National Water and Electricity Corporation.
In a televised address, President Barrow pleaded for peace, warned youth against sabotaging the power grid, and explained that relief would arrive via a new 24-megawatt generation unit at the Brikama Power Station alongside a planned 50-megawatt solar power plant.
