The death toll in the fire at two schools in Bukavu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has now risen to 24.

The children died in a stampede as they tried to flee the fire that engulfed the schools in rebel-held Bukavu in the eastern DRC.

Three-hundred houses have also been destroyed in the fire. The tragedy follows a similar fire in Kinshasa last weekend, where residents died in a stampede at a wedding banquet hall.
