South Africa’s (SA) largest trade union federation, Congress of SA Trade Unions (COSATU), has been hit by an internal dispute on the opening day of its 15th National Congress.
Several affiliated unions, led by the National Union of Mineworkers, have refused to submit their credentials in protest against the suspension of COSATU’s First Deputy President, Mike Shingange.
Shingange also heads the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union.
He was also suspended after going against his union’s instructions over his nomination for COSATU’s new leadership.
