Civil rights movement #NotinMyName International has urged South African (SA) men to take an active stand against gender-based violence (GBV) following the discovery of six women’s bodies in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, since July.
The latest victim was positively identified by family members as runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo, affectionately known as “Tsontso”, who failed to return home after going for an afternoon run on Thursday. Her discovery has heightened public outrage over serial violence against women across Gauteng province.
Addressing the surge in killings, #NotinMyName International Secretary-General Themba Masango condemned the ongoing violence, warning that systemic inaction allows perpetrators to act with impunity.
“The surge of GBV and femicide continues in SA, and it seems as if men have declared a war on women,” Masango stated. “Our femicide rate is 5.1 times higher than anywhere in the world. Men must intervene and actively fight this scourge.”
Community members and advocacy groups have called on police to intensify investigations in Kempton Park and allocate specialized forensic resources to track the perpetrators behind the murders.
