South Africa’s (SA) Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to update the media on the finalisation of the candidate list ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Over 140 000 candidates had submitted their nominations to contest 10 500 municipal seats before five in the afternoon deadline on August 28.
Following the submission, the commission then embarked on reviewing the submissions for compliance.
The process included checking whether candidates paid the applicable deposits, completed acceptance of nomination forms and submitted details of registered voters supporting their candidature.
This comes at a time when the African National Congress (ANC) has legally challenged the IEC over its Online Candidate Nomination System at the Electoral Court.
The ANC claims that it failed to upload one hundred and eighty-one of its candidates because they experienced difficulties with the IEC’s System and that the system’s final electronic confirmation step did not close during the final submission phase.
The IEC, on the other hand, has maintained that all candidates from political parties and independent candidates were given ample time to upload their details.
The briefing is expected to take place at the IEC’s headquarters in Centurion, Gauteng Province.
