Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana has confirmed that there are no plans to deploy the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to Ekurhuleni following the discovery of a ninth female victim in Villa Liza township, Boksburg.
The discovery has further broadened police investigations into a series of murders dating back to July 2026. Addressing calls for military deployment, Kekana emphasized that the SA Police Service (SAPS) possesses the necessary operational expertise and specialized investigative personnel to trace those responsible without military intervention.
Kekana clarified that military resources remain dedicated to specific operational mandates, whereas the killings fall strictly within police jurisdiction.
“Here, we talk of a crime and this crime needs law enforcement, the police to deal with it,” Major General Fred Kekana stated. “This is not an incident where SANDF might necessarily be needed. SANDF’s focus is operation prosper, Karabo and the areas identified for drug dealing and gangsterism specifically, and illegal mining. This one as the police, we are on top of it. We are managing the investigation team, its beefed, it’s got all experts.”
