British Airways has announced its return to Tanzania after a 15-year hiatus, revealing new direct routes to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar as part of its network expansion for the summer 2027 season.
The United Kingdom’s (UK) flag carrier confirmed on Thursday that it will launch flights from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. Framing Tanzania as “one country, two extraordinary escapes,” the airline aims to connect European leisure travelers directly to East Africa’s top safari destinations and coastal resorts.
The new routes mark a significant boost for Tanzania’s tourism sector, restoring direct UK carrier connectivity to the region for the first time since British Airways suspended its Dar es Salaam service.
Industry analysts expect the direct long-haul flights from London Gatwick to increase international visitor arrivals to northern Tanzania’s wildlife circuits and the Zanzibar archipelago, strengthening economic ties and trade corridors between the UK and East Africa.
