South African (SA) investigative journalist Micah Reddy is returning home unharmed following several days of detention by authorities in Djibouti.
Reddy, who serves as the Africa Co-ordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, was detained in Djibouti City alongside local journalist and fixer Mohamed Willo Ismael, also known as Kooki Mahmoud.
Both men were held from Saturday afternoon without official communication regarding their status or location before being released, with Mahmoud freed without charge and Reddy deported.
Confirming his safety, Reddy’s family clarified that he was not in the country to report on Djiboutian domestic affairs or government operations.
The family expressed gratitude to SA and British diplomatic missions, legal teams, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and media rights organisations for securing his release.
