South Africa’s (SA) suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya has been remanded in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria following his initial court appearance.
The senior official appeared briefly before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court following his arrest. Sibiya faces charges under the Sexual Offences Act, including the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman, the sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl, and human trafficking.
The National Prosecuting Authority requested his transfer to the Pretoria correctional facility following intelligence indicating a potential escape risk while in police custody.
The court postponed proceedings to September 29, 2026, for a formal bail application.
