South Africa’s (SA) political party the African National Congress’s (ANC) battle to reinstate 181 candidates in the November 4 local government elections is now headed to the Constitutional Court (ConCourt).
This comes after the Electoral Court dismissed its challenge last week.
The dispute centres on whether candidate details captured on the Electoral Commission of SA’s (IEC) system before the August 28 deadline, but not formally submitted, can legally be regarded as valid submissions.
IEC Chief Executive Officer Sy Mamabolo says the commission will now await direction from the Constitutional Court on how the law should be interpreted.
