Niger’s military government has provisionally stripped five more exiled political figures of their nationality, expanding a controversial policy targeting critics of the ruling junta.
Military leader General Abdourahamane Tiani signed the executive decree, which removes citizenship rights from prominent individuals living abroad, including former Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou and several former advisors to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The measure brings the total number of individuals provisionally stripped of their Nigerien nationality under the junta’s national terrorism database framework to 25.
Human rights organisations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), have raised strong concerns over the decree, warning that removing citizenship without due process violates international conventions against statelessness and serves as a tool to suppress diaspora dissent.
