The Republic of Guinea-Bissau is celebrating its National Day to mark 53 years since its unilateral declaration of independence from Portugal.
The anniversary commemorates the historic declaration made on September 24th, 1973, in the liberated southern region of Madina do Boé following a decades-long armed liberation struggle. Founded in 1956 by revolutionary leader Amílcar Cabral, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde led the resistance against Portuguese colonial rule, gaining control of two-thirds of the territory prior to the proclamation.
Although Portugal officially recognised the sovereignty of the West African nation on September 10th, 1974, following its Carnation Revolution in Lisbon, September 24th remains Guinea-Bissau’s official National Day.
