Egypt defender Hamdy Fathy has been forced to withdraw from the national team camp after sustaining an injury with his Qatari club, Al Wakrah.
Head coach Hossam Hassan has called up 20-year-old defender Omar Fayed, who currently plays in Serie A for Frosinone, as his replacement. Fathy, a former Confederation of African Football Champions League winner with Al Ahly, featured for the national side at the World Cup earlier this year. His absence adds to a growing injury list for Egypt that already includes Mohamed El-Shenawy, Yasser Ibrahim, and Mahmoud Trezeguet.
Hassan has otherwise retained the core of his World Cup squad while adding Ali Mahmoud and goalkeeper Abdelaziz El-Balouty.
The Pharaohs begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Group B qualifying campaign against Angola on Friday at Cairo International Stadium, followed by an away match against South Sudan in Juba on Tuesday. Egypt will then host South Africa in an international friendly in Cairo on October 4th.
