The Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened its Food and Nutrition Security Technical Steering Committee meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, bringing together member states, regional experts, and development partners to shape a new 10-year agenda for 2026 to 2036.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of the outgoing 2015 to 2025 framework while establishing priorities to address persistent climate-related shocks, economic pressures, and the growing triple burden of malnutrition across the region. Discussions centered on building resilient food systems through integrated regional markets, harmonised trade standards, the promotion of nutritious indigenous foods, and measures to reduce post-harvest food loss and waste.
Delegates emphasised moving from reactive crisis management toward proactive regional preparedness by strengthening early warning systems, cross-border surveillance, and emergency response mechanisms.
The draft strategy also highlights the need for increased domestic investment, sustainable resource mobilisation, digital transformation, and a unified accountability framework to track progress across Southern Africa over the next decade.
