In South Africa (SA), the ongoing extradition proceedings against Beninese activist Kemi Seba have taken a new turn as his legal defense team leverages his official status as a special advisor to Niger and his Nigerien diplomatic passport to secure his release.
Seba, who faces an international arrest warrant issued by Benin on charges of inciting rebellion following a foiled coup attempt, remains in SA custody after his bail application hearing was postponed to October 6, 2026.
The SA judiciary is scheduled to examine Benin’s formal extradition request on November 20, 2026. According to political analyst Aristide Kanoussou, Niger’s diplomatic involvement introduces complex immunity considerations under international law, which could challenge the execution of the extradition request while heightening regional geopolitical tensions between Sahel military authorities and West African governments.
