In South Africa (SA), Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Ronald Lamola stated that Pretoria remains open to dialogue with Washington regarding bilateral disputes, despite recent unilateral visa restrictions imposed by the United States (US).
Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lamola emphasized that SA seeks to avoid a retaliatory dispute with Washington, describing the United States as an important economic and strategic partner.
He noted that prior to the visa curbs announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, bilateral discussions were progressing on accommodating foreign investors in SA’s mining sector and addressing policies on Black economic empowerment.
Lamola reiterated that SA’s redress laws are grounded in its constitutional mandate to address historical racial inequalities, calling for mutual respect for national sovereignty and continued diplomatic engagement.
