In Ethiopia, an apparent federal government airstrike on a residential compound in Mekelle contained no visible military targets, rendering the strike unlawfully indiscriminate.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged federal authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into the strike as a possible war crime, as renewed clashes between Ethiopian government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front continue to escalate across northern regions.
Speaking on behalf of the international monitoring group, HRW Deputy Africa Director Laetitia Bader called on the Ethiopian military to abide strictly by international humanitarian law to prevent further harm to innocent non-combatants.
The air-dropped munition hit the Daero neighborhood in the Tigray regional capital, wounding 13 civilians including seven children and damaging homes in a housing block for teachers and their families.
