Border Management Authority (BMA) and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) have acknowledged severe commercial traffic congestion at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Mpumalanga, warning of its expanding impact on the broader regional economy.
Officials from both tax and border agencies stated that they are engaging directly with Mozambican counterparts to streamline the movement of freight trucks along the busy trade corridor.
BMA Deputy Assistant Commissioner Mmemme Mogotsi explained that the ongoing gridlock stems from a combination of rising commercial traffic, limited physical infrastructure, and operational bottlenecks on both sides of the border.
Mogotsi pointed out that key processing operations at the 7-kilometer checkpoint are designed as a joint arrangement, meaning its efficiency relies heavily on synchronised staff deployment, system integration, and co-ordinated traffic management from both SA and Mozambican authorities.
