The Kenyan government has classified expected El Niño related rains as an imminent national security threat, warning that all 47 counties could be affected.
Authorities are urging people across Kenya to closely follow official weather and disaster management updates, as the country prepares for potentially severe rainfall and its impact on lives and property.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki made the remarks recently after chairing an El Niño preparedness meeting at his Karen residence.
“Where vacation orders are issued, they must be complied with. Where certain movements may be restricted to avoid a loss of life. For example, in the past where we’ve had people crossing flooded rivers, ignoring security alerts, we do not want that to happen.”
The warning comes as the Kenya Human Rights Commission raises concerns about the potential human rights impact of the rains.
The Commission says severe flooding could result in injuries, deaths, loss of property and livelihoods, while also affecting people’s right to dignity and life.
