South Africa’s (SA) Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, says tackling Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) cannot be the responsibility of the police alone.
She says while law enforcement has a key role, prevention, support for victims and successful prosecutions also require action across the wider criminal justice system.
Dimpane was speaking at a week-long national inquiry examining SA’s response to gender-based violence and femicide, including the reporting of cases, victim support and the handling of investigations and prosecutions.
The inquiry comes after the discovery of the bodies of 12 women who were murdered in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province.
