Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau arrests retired general Valentino Phiri following arms trafficking investigation

Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested former Commander of the Malawi Defence Force, retired General Paul Valentino Phiri, over allegations linked to illegal arms trafficking and terrorist property dealings.

Anti-Corruption Bureau Senior Public Relations Officer Jacqueline Ngongonda confirmed that General Phiri faces five criminal counts, including abuse of office and dealing in terrorist property.

The charges stem from investigations into his alleged role in facilitating illegal arms transactions in June and July 2025. State investigators stated that the former military chief is currently being cautioned by authorities and is scheduled to make a formal appearance in court as legal proceedings commence.
