A new $6 million digital skills initiative aims to equip 20 000 young South Africans with skills for the growing e-commerce and digital economy.
The three-year programme, launched by the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) and Takealot, will combine training with workplace experience and practical knowledge of online marketplaces.
For many young South Africans, the challenge is not only finding a job, but having the digital skills needed to compete in a rapidly changing economy.
The new initiative is looking to bridge that gap by taking young people beyond the classroom and giving them practical exposure to e-commerce and the digital marketplace.
But with 20 000 young people targeted, questions remain over whether the programme can translate digital training into sustainable jobs and real income opportunities.
